Lenora Woods’ story is part of UNC REX Healthcare’s Brand New Day patient story series. Lenora reminds us that taking care of your health should always be a priority even if you are taking care of others.
Going along in my busy and all-consuming world, breast cancer never entered my mind. I had always looked after everyone else – children, grandchildren, parents and my husband who has had a massive stroke. At this point in my life, I didn’t have time to need medical attention. Or so I thought.
At the insistence of my current medical doctor, I went for my mammogram at the Rex Mobile Unit. The result was that I needed a biopsy which led to a lumpectomy and subsequently, radiation. Needless to say, all of this was not in my wildest dreams and definitely not in my schedule, but being a realist (or, I kind of like to think of myself as one) I faced this as a necessary part of my life course and I had no control, other than to accept it, try to keep a positive spirit, and to glean whatever I am required to from this experience and put it to use. Thankfully, my doctor referred me to Rex Mobile Mammography and I have been able to receive the treatment and care I need through their referral program. Early detection and UNC REX, both are a godsend.
