Are you tired of your usual exercise routine and ready to put some spice into your workout? Zumba® is a program that will do just that! Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance party that is fun, easy, and burns lots of calories!
This program was actually “accidently” created by Alberto “Beto” Perez, a group fitness instructor, in the mid-90’s. He had forgotten his traditional music to teach an aerobics class and improvised with what he had, which included Salsa, Merengue, and Mambo music styles among others. From this “accident” Perez created a class that focused on letting the music move the body rather than counting repetitions over the music.
What to Expect
Zumba is all about feeling the music. The moves used in class come mainly from the Salsa (faster beat), the Samba (forward and backward movements), Merengue (forward, side to side, and backward movements), Reggaeton, and some hip-hop moves. Don’t stress about not knowing the moves, being out of shape, or think you’re not coordinated enough. You don’t need a dance background to do Zumba – anyone can learn the moves and participate! Each class has new choreography and you are always able to work out at your own pace. Most of the classes are focused on cardio moves, however some instructors may incorporate light hand weights, a step routine, or other forms of exercise along with the dancing. Most of the moves are low impact and all of the moves can still be modified if needed. The most important thing to remember about the class is to have fun!
What to Wear
You don’t need specific attire to attend a Zumba class – any type of fitness clothing will work. Keep in mind that you will want something comfortable and cool. You will also want to wear shoes that will offer support; your exercise sneakers should do the job just fine.
Zumba’s goal is to spread the philosophy of loving everything we do, including our workouts! These classes really turn your workout into a fun, exhilarating experience that is easy to do, effective, and can be adapted for all fitness levels. Most people are so busy dancing and having fun they don’t even realize that they are really working out. This class will have you wanting to move and dance even when the class is over. Check out our Zumba class schedules and try Zumba at any of our four locations!
